Philosophy of Teaching

"If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn." -Ignacio Estrada

Writing about my philosophy of teaching was one of the most self reflective things I have ever done. This quote talks about my philosophy about teaching. I created an analogy to help others better understand this quote. When you go to a restaurant and order a burger, you don't want an uncooked burger. You also want the condiments on the burger, such as: lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes. Your student is the burger, and you are the chef. The costumers are the parents. You aren't going to serve your costumers an uncooked and plain burger. As a chef it is your job to serve a delicious, cooked burger. As a teacher, your job is to make sure all your students are delicious cooked burgers. If you have a raw burger, or a student who is not understanding what your teaching, then you must put the burger back on the grill until it becomes a delicious  cooked burger. As a future teacher, I have learned that you must adapt your lessons for all your students. You also don't just provide your students with other things besides education. The condiments on the burger represent things that you ultimately teach your children, such as: confidence, compassion, leadership, friendship, and many more.
After taking Science Methods I was opened to the world of technology in the classroom. I think using technology in the classroom is very important and help makes lessons more engaging. The 5 E's are very important to me when teaching science. The first E is engage. I believe every lesson that a teacher teaches should be engaging. You want your students to be interested in what they are learning about. You want their heads off their desks and looks of excitement on their faces. The second E is explore. It is important when teaching science to make sure your students are exploring the world around them. Students can only learn so much from a textbook. The third E is explain. This phase helps the students explain what and why they are exploring. The fourth E is elaborate. Through the new experiences, the students develop a better understanding about what they are learning about. The fifth and final E is evaluate. At this phase, I will be to evaluate what my students have done, and they will be able to evaluate themselves. I believe in post assessments. I want to see what my students understand and what they are still unclear of.
