Hurricanes

I find hurricanes so fascinating. Although they are very harmful when they make landfall they are very interesting to learn about. I have two stories from the hurricanes that I have experienced in my lifetime. I am from Long Island and I live off a barrier island off of Long Island, in a tiny town called Point Lookout. It is a cute, quite, beach town. I was born and raised a beach girl. My sophomore year off high school Hurricane Irene made landfall on my tiny town. My family and I were told to evacuate so we went out east to my uncle's house. My uncle lived by many trees. So when a gust of hurricane Irene's winds blew a tree fell on my uncle's car. I watched the whole thing happen and was in disbelief. Eventually when I returned home our basement was flooded with water. Nothing too major happened to my town. A few months later Hurricane Sandy hit. Hurricane Sandy was the a rough time for all. I was out of school for over two weeks. My friends lost their houses, and everything they had. I am so lucky that my house was still afloat. I even watched FEMA condemn some of my neighbors houses. We also evacuated to my uncle's house out east again. This time a tree fell on his pool and split it in half. Eventually, when I returned home our basement was destroyed, we had no heat, and the town I knew was destroyed. Because we could not stay in our house until the power was back on in my town, we stayed with my sister's friend. School started back up eventually and we heard everyone's Hurricane Sandy story. The stories were very sad. I was very lucky. Everyone and everything was in one piece. These past few weeks there has been many hurricanes. This is a bad hurricane season because of the warm water from climate change. I hope to volunteer with the Red Cross again to help the hurricane victims.

  1. Mikayla,

I really enjoyed reading this blog because I can relate to your experiences during Hurricane Sandy. The impact it had on me was not as tragic but overall, Hurricane Sandy will forever be apart of Long Island. The experience that you had with Hurricane Sandy will be very helpful in your future classroom. I really enjoyed working with you this semester and sad that it has come to an end.
