Fieldwork Reflection
Boy was I nervous!! This was my first time teaching a full class since I was a religious education teacher when I was in high school. My fieldwork group consisted of Kelsey Simeone, Amanda Picillo, and Nicole Kilduff. Our first lesson we taught the fourth grade class was a direct instruction lesson on the outer planets. Two of my group members have taken a methods class with Dr. Smirnova before, I have not. I was pretty new to teaching with a group. I am very used to one on one instruction for fieldwork.
Working in a group taught me a lot about myself and about the people I worked with. I was lucky enough to be able to teach with three of my best friends. We learned how to work around each others schedules; we also learned how to compromise with one another. Though at times we all became frustrated due to not having an idea, we ultimately put our creative juices together to come up with two unique and successful lessons. We sat in the library for days brainstorming and trying to come up with great lessons. We planned early which helped us a lot in the end. Facetiming with Dr. Smirnova the night before we taught gave all of us the confidence we needed to go into the classroom and teach the next day.
When I started speaking during the first lesson my nerves were put to ease. I keep thinking to myself that this is what I am meant for, no need to be nervous. I realized my true personality came out when I taught. I like to make learning fun and want my students to experience fun and jokes while they learn.Through my fieldwork experience I learned the importance of time management. My fall semesters are usually my busiest, but this fall semester was my most successful fall semester. I enjoyed the opportunity to teach the 4th graders at Bishop Dunn.
One thing I would recommend for myself for the spring is to start edTPA immediately after I finish teaching my lessons. I feel that now I am better prepared for social studies methods and I hope that I can be of assistance to new group members next semester. I will miss Amanda and Kelsey greatly, but they have taught me the skills to be a great group leader and I thank them for that.
